Tarpon Camp

Costa Rica is a popular destination for tarpon fly fishing, particularly at the mouth of the Rio Colorado River near the border with Nicaragua.

For years, Costa Rica has attracted adventurous anglers eager to catch the renowned tarpon, also known as the "Silver King." Fly fishing has a long tradition in the country, and the quality of the fishing remains consistently exceptional year after year.

The Rio Colorado, flowing south of the Nicaraguan border, is considered one of the premier locations for tarpon fishing. In September and October, massive schools of these fish gather at the river's mouth, feeding voraciously on the abundant herring found in the surrounding waters.

Most tarpon in the area weigh between 27 and 82 kg, though individual specimens weighing 82 to 91 kg are also encountered weekly. Fishing takes place at the river mouth and its immediate vicinity, as well as further offshore along bands of murky water.

Success depends largely on locating tarpon rising to the surface and accurately casting flies into actively feeding schools. Spotting and fishing within schools numbering hundreds of tarpon is not uncommon in this area.
