Although it is a relatively small river, it is famous for its exceptional brown trout population, and in summer it is also enriched by strong arrivals of Atlantic salmon. Due to its diverse character, Mýrarkvísl is considered one of the most interesting and enjoyable trout and salmon rivers in northern Iceland.
The river rises on the Reykjaheiði plateau, where it flows through shallow plains with crystal clear water. For about the first 15 kilometers, it offers a slower to moderately fast flow, which warms up quickly in early spring, creating excellent conditions for active feeding trout. This part of the river is ideal for fishing with small dry flies and nymphs, and provides extremely attractive and visual fishing.
Lower down the river, Mýrarkvísl enters a steep canyon, where the river becomes stronger and wilder. Deep pools, faster currents and numerous natural shelters create perfect conditions for large brown trout and Atlantic salmon, which hang out along rocks and other structures.
Before flowing into the famous Laxá River in the Aðaldalur Valley, the Mýrarkvísl widens again. Here, long, calmer stretches, flowing spillways and numerous productive pools intertwine, offering excellent fishing opportunities for trout and salmon of various sizes.
The fishing permit also includes fishing on Lake Langavatn, which is a great choice for families and relaxed fishing days. The lake is rich in smaller Arctic char, and occasionally surprises with beautiful specimens of larger brown trout.
