The Lónsá River is located in the northeast of Iceland, on the Langanes Peninsula, about a three and a half hour drive from Akureyri. Despite its small size, it offers an extremely diverse fishery and is home to a healthy population of brown trout throughout the season, while the estuary also hosts sea trout and Arctic charr, which migrate with the tides.
The first major arrival of Arctic charr usually begins around mid-May, and their numbers remain high until August and September. It is this spring-summer fishing that is one of the greatest specialties of Lónsá. When the charr and sea trout move through the estuary in large numbers, they often feed on small crustaceans, especially gammarus. The crystal-clear water makes it possible to observe and catch them, often from relatively short distances. Such fishing is extremely visual and unpredictable, and many anglers describe it as an experience that is difficult to compare to any other.
A special part of the fishing story is Sauðaneslón, the lagoon into which the river flows. In the spring, it is home to a large number of Arctic goldfish. They can be quite demanding and picky, so it can sometimes take a while to figure out what they are currently feeding on. However, when you find the right combination of fly and presentation, fishing can turn into an incredible action in an instant.
The upper part of the river offers more classic fly fishing with nymphs, jigs and occasionally dry flies. The first arrivals of goldfish often also bring larger specimens, which are extremely interesting for fly fishing due to their strength and combativeness.
The water in Lónsá is usually crystal clear, so a careful approach is key. The river is small and the fish quickly detect unusual movement, so precise movement along the water and discreet presentation of the fly are often more important than the choice of pattern.
Lónsá is a destination for anglers looking for something different: a small, intimate river, crystal clear water, sight fishing and an extremely interesting combination of brown trout, sea trout and Arctic goldfish.
