The Laxá River is one of the most prestigious fishing rivers in Iceland. In addition to being one of the best salmon rivers in the country and known for its exceptionally large Atlantic salmon, it also has a reputation as one of the best rivers for brown trout fishing.
The river originates from the famous Lake Mývatn and changes its name several times on its way to Skjálfandi Bay, depending on the area it flows through. In the area around Mývatn it is known as Laxá and Mývatnssveit, in the Laxárdalur valley it flows as Laxá and Laxárdal, and in its lower reaches, which are particularly famous for their large salmon, it is called Laxá and Aðaldal.
Every stretch of the river offers excellent opportunities for brown trout fishing. The rich and nutrient-rich water provides an abundance of natural food, including dipterids (two-winged insects), snails, sedges and bees, which allows the trout to quickly gain size and fitness. However, the life of these fish is by no means that easy for the fisherman – trout are extremely strong, as they are used to living in a strong current, so long and demanding fights often follow after the catch.
The Laxá offers quality fishing throughout almost the entire season. In the warmer part of the year, fishing can be somewhat difficult due to aquatic plants growing in the river. At the beginning of the season, nymphs and scads are especially effective, but with the beginning of mass insect spawning, tactics quickly change. When insects start to hatch, the precise presentation of a dry fly or emerger becomes almost indispensable.
It is this transition between different fishing methods that gives the Laxá River its special charm. From strong trout in fast currents to large salmon in the lower reaches, it offers an experience that will satisfy even the most demanding fly fishermen.
